David Rothenberg

David Rothenberg is a professor of philosophy and music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a special interest in animal sounds as music. He plays jazz clarinet and has previously explored, recorded, and played together with birds, whales, and insects. He has summarized his research in the books "Why Birds Sing: A Journey into the Mystery of Bird Song," "Thousand Mile Song," and "Bug Music," and has released several albums.

Rothenberg's latest book is called "Secret Sounds of Ponds," where he tells how he has thrown the microphone into the water and captured mysterious sounds and jerky rhythms created by masses of tiny animals in motion, forming suggestive and unexpectedly musical soundscapes.

At HyttDreva, Rothenberg will talk about his research and play music and films, but he will also throw the microphone into the Lankälven river and jam with the critters hiding below the surface.

Rothenberg will also perform together with the painter Jan van Boeckel.
